- Quiet: Self-explanatory
- Loud: Self-explanatory
- Meditative: Self-explanatory
- Exciting: Self-explanatory
- Powerful: Used when a song has a strong message coupled with a powerful melody – generally includes songs that have accentuated climaxes. Quiet songs can also be just as powerful as loud songs (i.e., Hymn
- Versatile: Used when the same song can be sung at different tempos to achieve different worship atmospheres (i.e., “God Is So Good” can be sung slow, medium, or fast)
Themes
- Blessing: Songs that either bless others or bless the Lord
- Blood: Songs that sing of the blood of Christ
- Confession of Faith: When the song generally makes statements and confessions of faith (i.e., “I believe Jesus saves”)
- Covenant: Songs that sing of God’s promises to us, and the bigger picture of His covenant
- Cross: Songs that mention the cross, mount Calvary, the “tree”, etc.
- Evangelism & Missions: Songs that speak of our commission as evangelists and how we want to carry out God’s will to save souls
- Exaltation: Songs that specifically exalt and lift up praises to God
- Filling of the Spirit: Songs that speak of, to, or in request of the filling of Holy Spirit
- Friendship: Songs referring to Jesus or God as our “friend”
- Glory: Songs that speak of, or give glory to, God
- Grace: Songs mentioning the grace of God; can also be indirectly mentioned (i.e., “you came down, though I deserved nothing”)
- Hope: Self-explanatory
- Identity: Songs that speak to our identity as children of God, remnants, witnesses, etc.
- Immanuel: Songs proclaiming that God is with us, or of how we long to be with Him
- Love: Songs about the love of God, or of how much we love Him
- Only: In reference to the upper room (darakbang) reference to “Only” – (e.g., “only Christ, only the Kingdom of God, only the filling of the Spirit”) – similar to the Sufficiency tag
- Power: Songs about God’s power, or the power that is given to us by Him
- Prayer: Songs that themselves are a prayer, or speak of the power of prayer
- Remnant: Songs with references to God’s remnants, the next generation, those who remain, etc.
- Resurrection: Self-explanatory
- Salvation: Self-explanatory
- Self-Dedication: Songs about wanting to give and devote our lives to God (i.e., “I Offer My Life”)
- Sing My Soul: Songs that speak to our inner selves, similar to the way David in the bible would call out to his soul to make a confession of faith (e.g., “10,000 Reasons”, “As the Deer”, “How Great Thou Art”)
- Sufficiency: Songs about the sufficiency of Christ – that Jesus is enough / more than enough / all I need – similar to the Only tag
- Thanksgiving: Self-explanatory
- Victory: Self-explanatory
- Word: Songs about the Word of God
- Yearning: Songs about yearning for God – to want to know him more, to want a deeper relationship with Him, to need the Lord every hour (e.g, “I Need Thee Ev’ry Hour”, “In the Secret”)
Events & Uses
- Easter Sunday – Songs specifically centered around Easter and the death and resurrection of Christ
- Christmas – Songs specifically centered around Christmas and the birth of Christ
- Group Participation – Used when the song calls for the larger group to participate by shouting something out or singing something separately (e.g., “Deep Down in My Heart”, “We Are the Chosen Generation”, “You Are Holy (Prince of Peace)”)
- Body Worship – Used for songs that have a known body worship routine – ask one of our praise team members for more information!
- Children – Used for songs that originated as children’s songs, but can be used universally
